Ace Granite FAQ

Granite is an igneous rock, which means it was once molten and formed as it cooled deep within the earth. Minerals within granite typically appear as small flecks throughout the stone. Granite is one of the hardest materials on earth. Used as a countertop material, it is resistant to scratches, acids, stains and heat. It is long lasting, durable and available in a wide variety of colors, textures and unique crystal patterns that create an inviting environment for your kitchen or bath.

Marble was once limestone that achieved metamorphosis from intense pressure and temperature within the earth. This altered its crystalline structure and introduced other minerals that produced the characteristic colors and veining. The complex formation of these stones over millions of years produced a look that is unlike any machine-made products. Marble works beautifully especially in the bath where it’s veining patterns and color create exquisite designs. Marble is sensitive to acidic foods such as vinegar, lemon, tomatoes, wine, as well as some tile cleaners, mildew removers and other harsh cleansers. Marble is also more susceptible to scratching due to the fact that it is much softer than granite.

Of all of the stones, granite is the least porous. Before being sent to the distributor, it is polished and impregnated with a resin. After fabrication and installation, another sealant is applied to further protect it from staining. Water left on the granite for a long period of time will show evidence of moisture, however, over time, the dark spot will disappear. Oil left on the granite will slowly be absorbed into the stone. Wipe these areas as they occur. If an oil stain should occur, you can wipe the area with a poultice to draw the oil out. Over time, the oil will redistribute through the granite and become undetectable.

Unlike any other materials, granite does not lose its shine and luster. The fact that granite is one of the hardest stones next to diamonds means that normal use will not damage your counter or tabletops.

Granite can withstand a dish hot from the oven or stove right onto its surface. Most "man-made" synthetic solid surface tops cannot.

If granite can withstand the fabrication process, it will never break under normal kitchen conditions.

Mild soap and water works fine. There are spray cleaners with an anti-bacterial agent available that you can use. Never use cleaners that contain acid, citrus base, ammonia or bleach. These can damage the finish.

A drop-in sink is, just that, dropped in from above the counter top, into the cut out. This adds no additional cost, and most cost conscious consumers opt for this. An under-mount sink sits beneath the surface, under a polished rim. The benefit to this option is that it provides a smooth surface from counter to sink. Because of additional polishing involved, there is an upgrade charge.

Quartz can be referred to as engineered stone or compound stone.  Quartz countertops are man-made, formed by combining 90 to 93% of powder rocks and natural hard minerals with 7 to10% of resins, polymers and pigments. Nowadays, some quartz also include fragments of mirrors and other glasses creating mixtures that produce unique looks.
